Makar Sankranti is celebrated when Sun God transits in Capricorn. The unique thing about this festival is that it is celebrated not on different dates like other festivals, but only on January 14 every year, when the sun passes through the Makara line through Uttarayan.

Shanidev is considered the lord of Capricorn and Aquarius. For this reason, this day marks the unique union of father and son. There is also a tradition of making laddus and other sweet dishes made of sesame and jaggery on the day of Makar Sankranti.

The importance behind making laddus of sesame and jaggery is that; it is the winter season at this time. Due to this, laddus made of sesame and jaggery are beneficial for health.

Especially on the day of Makar Sankranti, khichdi is made, eaten, and donated. Therefore, in many places, this festival is also known as Khichdi. Makar Sankranti is celebrated as Lohri in Punjab and Jammu and Kashmir.

In Tamil Nadu State, Makar Sankranti is celebrated as Pongal. Makar Sankranti is celebrated in the name of the Khichdi festival in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. On this day, people eat khichdi and donate it.

Elsewhere, they eat and donate yogurt and milk. Elsewhere we make sesame seeds and eat and donate. On the day of Makar Sankranti, by donating warm clothes, sweets of sesame, wealth with khichdi, Saturn afflicted person gets relief from sufferings.

All the people of the poor, and the disabled, and the working class are considered as representative of Shani. And they should never be tortured. The youngsters of the house should touch the elder's feet and take their blessings on this day.

And they should offer sweets made of sesame and hot clothes as gifts. By doing this, Suryadev is pleased. Having a Bath is also very important on the day of Makar Sankranti.

On the day of Makar Sankranti, as the charity has special importance; in the same way, having a bath has a lot of importance. Bathing on this day should be done before dawn in a holy river.

Having a bath on this day not only purifies the body but also purifies the mind. On Makar Sankranti, having a bath in a river destroyed all kinds of sins. And after death, a person attains salvation.

One must bathe in a holy river on the day of Makar Sankranti. If you cannot bathe in a holy river, then you should bathe by adding sesame and Ganges water in your home.

And then you should wear clean clothes. After that, take a clean outpost, sprinkle Ganga water on it, and spread a red cloth. After that, make Ashtadal Lotus with red sandalwood on that post.

Install a picture of Suryadev on the outpost. Take water in a copper pot, and place it on the outpost. And invoke Suryadev with intactness in his hand and offer red sandalwood tilak to Suryadev.

After this, garland them with red flowers and offer red flowers. Along with this, offer Naivedya, red fruits to Suryadev. And then chant the mantras of Suryadev.

And also, read the Aditya heart source. After this, worship them duly. Offer incense and lamps. And perform Aarti of Suryadev. After this, offer them to the laddus made of sesame and jaggery.
