This incident is from the Dwapar era. Indra was being worshiped in Braj. Lord Krishna reached there with his Bal Sakhas and asked him who is being worshiped here. All the Gokul residents said that Devraj Indra's worship is being organized.

Then Lord Krishna told the people of Gokul that we do not benefit from Indra. It is their responsibility to rain and they only carry out their responsibility, while Govardhan Parvat promotes and protects our cow's wealth.

Which purifies the environment. Therefore Govardhan should be worshiped not Indra. All the people obeyed Krishna and started worshiping Govardhan. Due to which Indra became angry, he ordered the clouds to destroy Gokul.

Everyone got scared due to the heavy rain. Then Shri Krishna lifted the Govardhan mountain on his junior finger and saved all the Gokul residents from Indra's wrath.

Govardhan receives such a title because it is the only permanent and stable remnant of Lord Krishna's time. While the Yamuna river of that period kept changing its stream from time to time, Govardhan existed in its original place in an unstable form.

Govardhan is also considered as the form of Lord Krishna and he is worshiped in this form. In the Garg Samhita, showing the importance of Govardhan, it is said - Govardhan is the king of the mountains and beloved of Hari. Like this, there is no other shrine on earth and in heaven.
