What Is The Albuquerque International Balloon Party Description and history:

The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta is an annual international hot air balloon festival held in October in Albuquerque. The Fiesta held at the Balloon Fiesta Park lasts for nine days.

The first of the party took place in 1972 during the 50th anniversary of radio 770 KOB. During the first event, only thirteen balloons were available, which did not reach the highest number of balloons flown at an event (England held the record for 19 balloons).

Cutter Flying Service and radio hosted the event, which drew over 20,000 viewers. Hosting the first world hot air balloon championship in February 1974 established Albuquerque as an international destination for a balloon flight.

How Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta Party grew:

The party started as a small ceremony in a parking lot in 1972. The following year, the balloon festival became an international event and has since become the largest balloon party in the world.

The success of the party is linked to the appropriate weather conditions favoring balloon flight and the immense support the event receives from the local and international community regarding funding and participation.

The event is scheduled for the first week of October when morning temperatures are cool, allowing for the efficient balloon launch. Also contributing to the party's success is the Albuquerque box, with its predictable wind patterns, which allow balloonists to navigate their craft.

The History and Facts of the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta party:

History:

The history and facts of Balloon Fiesta tell the story of the growth of this incredible event, the largest balloon event in the world.

• The first balloon event in Albuquerque took place on April 8, 1972, at the Coronado Mall with thirteen participating balloons. The first event was a promotion for KOB-AM radio.
• From 1972 to 1975, the balloon events took place in late winter / early spring.
• The first event to be called the "Balloon Party" took place in the fall of 1975.
• The first Balloon Glow (where the balloons are tied and the pilots release flaming gas into the balloons at night) took place on Christmas Eve 1979 when the local pilots wanted to thank the New Mexicans for their support of the balloons.
• Gas balloons were part of the events until 1981 and were discontinued until 1993 when Gordon Bennett's career was brought to the party. The World Championship began in 1994, and America's Challenge Gas Balloon Race began in 1995.
• The first Glowdeo Special Shapes started with just 28 special-shaped balloons.
• The first Dawn Patrol was launched at the 1978 Balloon Party. The Dawn Patrol was created when two hot air balloons developed position lighting systems that enabled night flight. These pilots take off in the dark, around 6 a.m., and stay in the air until it is light enough to see the landing sites. Other balloon pilots look to the Dawn Patrol to get an idea of wind speeds and directions at different altitudes.
