HISTORY OF PROCESSION OF "HOLY BLOOD" IN BRUGES, BELGIUM:

The story had started in the 13th century. In the 13th century, Prince Thierry of Alsace returned from the Fourth Crusade with a valuable trophy, the relic of the Holy Blood, a cloth believed to have been soaked in the blood of Christ by Joseph of Aramatia after he removed the body from the cross.

This piece of cloth soaked in sacred blood is preserved in a crystal cylinder. This relic was given to Thierry by King Baldwin of Jerusalem for excellent service during the two Crusades.

In the then flourishing Bruges. Returning from the Crusades, Prince Thierry of Alsace built the Sacred Blood Church, and a traditional liturgical procession began in May each year.

Metropolitan Athenagoras of the Ecumenical Patriarchate joined the traditional procession of "Holy Blood" in the Belgian city of Bruges.

The procession took place on May 25. The city of Bruges preserves another shrine - the relics of St. Basil the Great, which were also erected by the Crusaders in Cappadocia.

The Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ from its origin to the present day:

The Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ dates back to the thirteenth century, and this day is one of the most revered and celebrated feasts in the Church.

In 2018, Pope Francis had presided over the liturgy for the feast and procession with Holy Communion in Ostia, near Rome, as Paul VI did in 1968.

Deborah Donini - Svetla Chalakova - Vatican:

The Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ with the procession led by the Holy Communion is undoubtedly one of the most beloved holidays and among the strongest moments of prayer. This holiday commemorates the real presence of Jesus in the Eucharist.

The roots of this holiday. Its origin in the thirteenth century:

The roots of this holiday date back to the thirteenth century, and its initiator is the French nun Julien Cornion (c. 1192-1258) from Liege, Belgium. In 1208, Julien, falling into prayerful ecstasy, saw a bright white moon but which on one side was marked by a shadow.

A vision that highlights the lack in the Church of a feast in honor of the Blessed Sacrament. At her request, the Bishop of Liege introduced a feast in honor of the Body and Blood of Christ in the diocese. The year is 1247.

But the holiday was officially announced for the whole church on September 8, 1264, by Pope Urban IV with the bull "Transiturus de Hoc Mundo." Their familiar processions with the Holy Communion, or as they call them in Bulgaria "Alai," began in the early thirteenth century.

In Italy, this innovation is attributed to Francis of Assisi (early 1226). The first such case in France is in the chapel "St. Crossin Avignon in 1226. By order of King Louis VII, who celebrated the victories against the Albigensian heretics.

In addition, numerous monastic orders are founded in the Western Christian tradition, devoting much of their time to contemplating the Eucharist.

The Pope in Ostia:

Some countries, including Bulgaria and Italy, celebrate this holiday on the Sunday after the Feast of the Holy Trinity. In the Vatican, this holiday is celebrated on the Thursday after the Feast of the Holy Trinity.

In 2017, Pope Francis decided to hold the traditional procession on Sunday to "help the presence of more people and not create additional problems for the city on weekdays."

In 2018, Pope Francis led the Eucharistic procession in Ostia, near Rome, rather than as has traditionally been the case for the past 40 years from the Basilica of San Giovanni in Laterano to that of Santa Maria Maggiore.

But that decision of the pope was not a precedent. Exactly 50 years ago, in 1968, Pope Paul VI did the same.

Therefore, on June 3, Pope Francis had presided over the liturgy for the feast in the church of "St. Monica" in Ostia and had led the procession to the parish of "St. Bonaria."
